  • Chandigarh, May 18--The Haryana Government has decided to accord the status of university to Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Sonepat). This was disclosed by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Lal, while laying the foundation stone of Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram Kushti Academy at Kharkhoda in Sonepat district, today.
  • He said the state government was doing all for the development of sports and welfare of players in the state and announced the decision to give Rs 21 lakh to the academy.
  • The Chief Minister said Haryana had emerged as a national and international hub of sports. The state government has formulated sports policy and substantially increased the prize money for the medal winners. As many as 309 Vyaayamshalas have been started in villages which would be further expanded.
  • In addition, 525 sports nurseries have been set up for the students between the age group of 9 and 14 years in government schools so that they are equipped to play the sports of their choice in future.
  • The Chief Minister said in order to develop conventional sports of Kushti and Kabaddi, state level competitions carrying prize money of Rs 1 crore in each discipline have been started. Haryana has proved itself to be a leader in sports.  This year, Haryana sportspersons won 22 medals out of total 66 won by India in the Commonwealth Games, he added.
  • Speaking at the ceremony, the Finance Minister, Capt. Abhimanyu, said sportsperson of Haryana are the pride of our country. They have brought the state global fame. The state government, especially the Chief Minister, gives priority to developing sports. Several steps have been taken in this direction. League matches are being organised for Kushti and Kabaddi, and eighty per cent of the participants are from Haryana.
  • On this occasion, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, Mr Rajiv Jain, and officers and officials of the academy were also present.
