Chandigarh, February 1- The International Surjakund Craft Mela, which came into being 34 years back in 1987 to preserve and popularize the fading handicrafts of Indian artisans, has taken a huge leap forward as it has gained prominence at an international commercial arena. Foreign visitors at the fair were fascinated by the colourful and entertaining artefacts that were on display.
Today, the 34th Surajkund International Handicrafts Mela-2020 was inaugurated by the President Mr. Ram Nath Kovind where Haryana Governor Mr. Satyadeo Narain Arya, Haryana Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Lal, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Jai Ram Thakur were also present on the occasion. The President was accompanied by his wife Savita Kovind. This year's theme state is Himachal Pradesh while partner nation is Uzbekistan.
The fair has gained so much popularity among the people that this year more than 20 lakh people are expected to see it in the 16-day fair. Last year, 13 lakh people visited the fair, of which more than 1 lakh were foreign tourists. Foreign visitors at the fair were especially drawn to the beautiful handicrafts of India.
