  • Chandigarh, August 14—With 11 more blocks in Haryana having been declared “saksham” (capable) for achieving grade-level competencies by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Lal, today, taking the tally to 18, and 13 more blocks inching pretty close to achieving the tag, things have begun to look up in government schools across the state.
  • Making the announcement on these 11 blocks, the Chief Minister said the state-wide campaign being run by his office in co-operation with the Education Department to improve the quality of education in schools had begun to show results. It aims to enhance the learning level of students of government schools and to ensure they have the knowledge of subjects as per their age group.
  • The blocks declared Saksham are Karnal, (Karnal),  Dadri (Charkhi Dadri), Nahar (Rewari), Lakhan Majra (Rohtak), Bahadurgarh (Jhajjar), Farukhnagar (Gurugram), Gurgaon (Gurugram), Kanina (Mahendragarh), Nangal Choudhary (Mahendragarh) Rajaund (Kaithal) and Samalkha (Panipat).
  • Mr Manohar Lal said earlier seven blocks had been declared Saksham in the first three rounds. As many as 13 blocks are very close to becoming Saksham. The aim is to make the whole of Haryana Saksham soon, he added.
  • Detailing broad contours of the campaign,  the Haryana Education Minister, Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, said under the Saksham campaign various initiatives were being implemented, including focus on remedial education through learning enhancement programme, improving SAT results by reducing cheating, improving data collection and data analysis, strengthening the review and monitoring mechanism, facilitating macro (district) and micro (block) planning and implementation through Saksham Plans and improving technology systems (Management Information System, Academic Monitoring System) of the Education Department.
  • The decision and assessment of a particular block to be Saksham is taken by third party (Hyderabad-based Gray Matters India). If a block feels that 80 per cent of its students have achieved grade level competency, it nominates itself under ‘Saksham Ghoshana’, which is then assessed by third party. It includes assessment of students of Grade 3, 5 and 7 in Hindi language and mathematics. The latest round of assessment was done on August 3 in which 23 blocks participated from 17 districts, Mr Sharma added.
